ANGARD, Maxime Born 1849 Arronville, Seine-et-Oise, died 1912 Paris France. Professionally active from 1890. Established at 23 Passage Delaruelle, Paris and later at 82 rue Liebnitz. Innovative work. One violin made from oak. Invented a new peg system called ‘La Sécurité’. Own made varnish. Assisted by noted player Maurice Hayot in regulating instruments. First prize for tone in Paris 1912. This cello is based on an 1897 pattern traced from a Maxime Angard cello in 1987.

Wood 

Top: European Spruce; 25 years air dried; 1 mm grain width at center and 3 mm at outer flank; 2 piece; strong bear claw features

Back: European Maple; 25 years air dried; 2 piece; medium narrow flamed

Varnish

Red/brown; ground color golden walnut; spirit fused with oils
